Dear Councilmember Phil Claiborne,
Elected officials have a responsibility to those they are elected to serve.
They have a responsibility to listen to their constituents, to work in the best interest of the community and to be an effective steward of taxpayer dollars.
Unfortunately, Metro Councilmember Claiborne, you have failed in the most basic responsibility: to be civil.
Recently a number of Nashvillians contacted you expressing their opposition to Mayor Dean's 53-cent property tax increase. The communications were respectful and focused on the policy.
Unfortunately, the folks who took the time to contact you on an important matter facing the Metro received a derisive, wholly unacceptable reply.
Below is one Nashvillians response from your email address:

Following this week's passage in the Senate, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is again calling on President Obama to back up his words with action, and veto re-authorization of the Export-Import bank.
AFP President Tim Phillips said, "As a senator, Obama was right when he called the Ex-Im bank a fund for corporate welfare. Now he has a chance to back up all the rhetoric with meaningful action. Our video is a clear challenge to President Obama, asking him to take a stand against corporate welfare and veto re-authorization."

We need your help - contact Mayor Karl Dean and the Metro Council by clicking on the links and tell them you support cutting spending, not huge tax increases.
Taxpayers should not be on the hook for Nashville city leaders' lack of fiscal responsibility.
Consider for a moment the facts.
