The Wichita chapter of the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-Kansas) is thanking everyone who carried and signed the petition to put the city’s hotel guest tax incentive on the ballot.
In September, the Wichita City Council approved a large incentive package for the hotel, including a proposal to refund 75 percent of the hotel’s guest tax to the hotel for its own use. AFP-Kansas’ Wichita chapter and other local groups organized a petition drive to collect enough signatures for the city to put the guest tax provision up for a public vote.
On Sunday, AFP-Kansas will host a final petition collection and thank-you party for those who have signed the petition, been willing to carry petitions in their own neighborhoods, and helped spread the word about the effort. The petition party will be 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Corporate Hills Marriott (9100 Corporate Hills Drive). Cake, coffee and punch will be served. The event is free and open to the public, but it is encouraged that anyone wanting to come RSVP at infoks@afphq.org or by calling 316-681-4415.
“We’ve been pleased with the public support of this effort to give Wichita voters the final say on whether one hotel should get a better tax break than its competitors,” said AFP-Kansas state director Derrick Sontag. “We welcome anyone who has been involved in the petition drive, and anyone who would like a final opportunity to sign the petition, to join us on Sunday.”
Free notaries will be at Sunday’s event to receive petitions from volunteers who have not yet turned in any collected signatures. The petitions will be delivered to the Wichita City Clerk’s office Dec. 6 for validation.
