Lame Duck One-Stop Shop

AFP has been on the forefront of stopping the lame duck session of Congress and exposing elected officials who want to ignore the will of voters and pass controversial laws in a mad rush before the new Congress is seated in January.

Legislation such as cap-and-trade, card check, union pension bailouts, and enormous tax hikes have repeatedly been rejected by citizens, yet there many in Washington who want to sneak these horrible policies through after the voters have spoken. Below is a series of articles, clips, and quotes that detail what bills Congress may try to pass during the lame duck session and what we can do to stop it.

Notable Quotes CONFIRMING Lame Duck
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nev.: "We’re bound to come back in a lame-duck session. … Maybe after the elections we can get some help from Republicans on these key issues."

More Harry Reid: "Remember, we still are going to be in Congress, working, after the election. I've committed to a lame-duck."

Sen. John Kerry, Mass. on cap-and-trade: “We are going to continue to work. If it is after the election, it may well be that some members are free and liberated and feeling that they can take a risk or do something."

Sen. Tom Harkin, Iowa on card check: “to those who think it’s dead, I say think again. We're still trying to maneuver.”

Sen. Kent Conrad, N. Dak. on taxes and spending expects “one of the most significant lame-duck sessions in the history of the United States.”

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, W. Va. on the left’s lame duck agenda: “I've got lots of things I want to do.”

Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, Ariz., co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, on the lame duck agenda: “the lame duck would be the last chance, quite honestly, for the foreseeable future.”

Notable Quotes AGAINST Lame Duck
Sen. Susan Collins, Maine: "Not going to play that game." That would be "just wrong" and "blatantly against the will of the people."

Sen. Olympia Snowe, Maine: "I agree that Congress should not reconvene in a lame duck session after the November elections, since such sessions often are not productive. As a strong advocate for limited government and responsible governance, I share the concerns over the potential lack of accountability inherent in a lame duck session."

Lindsey Graham told the Charleston Tea Party: "I promise I will not vote yes on any policy bills during the lame duck session. I will even sign something if you want me to." (We followed up and he provided this letter.)

Sen. Russ Feingold, Wis.: "By allowing votes just after an election but before the newly elected Congress takes office, lame-duck sessions provide an opportunity to override the public's will as expressed at the ballot box. Rather than schedule a lame-duck session this year, Congress should complete its work before the upcoming elections."

Christine O'Donnell, Del.: "As your senator, I will focus on stopping the Mike Castle supported Obama agenda, including supplying the 41st needed vote in the upcoming lame duck session against 'Cap and Trade,' and further budget breaking stimulus."

Rep. Mark Kirk, Ill.: "The only legitimate thing for the Congress to do is to pass a short-term continuing resolution to keep the doors open -- and let the voice of the American people as communicated through their new representatives and senators speak in January."

John Raese, W. Va.: "It is completely inappropriate for House and Senate Democrats, who would be in cahoots with President Obama, to take up any legislation that would significantly affect the country after an election that will considerably alter the political landscape of Congress. Any attempt to do so would be a slap in the face to all Americans who voted for a change from the liberal status quo."

Jim DeMint, S. C.: "Democrats are playing political games and Americans are going to fire them for it in November. When the Democrats come back in December to box up their personal belongings, Republicans must make sure that’s all they take with them." Read More
