After Americans for Prosperity led a grassroots effort against Mayor Peyton’s proposed tax hike, the Jacksonville City Council rejected the increase with a 10-9 vote last night.
“The City Council should be commended for standing up for Jacksonville taxpayers,” said Dan Quiggle, state chairman of Americans for Prosperity- Florida. “First Coast families cannot afford another tax increase," added Quiggle.
Americans for Prosperity activists urged Jacksonville citizens to put pressure on the City Council with hundreds of phone calls and letters to the Council members, urging them to vote down the burdensome tax increase. Additionally, AFP purchased radio ads on WOKV and WBOB encouraging taxpayers to call the City Council and made organized phone calls to taxpayers.
“Yesterday’s City Council vote is a victory for Jacksonville residents,” stated Victor Wilhem, Jacksonville resident and one of the Americans for Prosperity members present for the Monday vote. “But we will continue our efforts until the property tax rate is officially set.”
In 2008 Americans for Prosperity defeated Mayor Peyton's proposed $250 million property tax increase.
