No tax hike talk until District 186 opens books

The State-Journal Register’s editorial board makes an excellent point in Wednesday’s editorial chastising Springfield School District 186 for not changing its spending ways in the wake of a flailing economy and reduced revenues.

Before any discussion of sales tax increases to pay for more spending, the taxpayers of Springfield should be able to openly examine the school district’s books. Just as we’ve done at the national, state and even local levels in Illinois, let’s put pressure on District 186 to begin posting its checkbook register online as well as its vendor contracts and its budget.

Until we see what’s on the books and how District 186 is going to live within in their means, any tax hike proposal should be dead on arrival.
