Governor Brian Sandoval supports raising taxes by extending a number of taxes that were previously scheduled to expire at the end of June.
The recent Nevada Supreme Court ruling stated that certain revenues are not available to balance the budget. This decision impacted multiple accounts containing funds, which the Governor had used to supplement general fund spending in his budget. The total of all these funds is nearly $656 million.
In light of this ruling, the Governor has announced his support for preventing the June 30, 2011 expiration of taxes. Americans for Prosperity has always opposed temporary tax increases for this reason. At expiration, a reason always exists to extend the higher rates penalizing hard-working families.
Since the Governor's original budget proposal of $5.8 billion, an additional $400 million in revenue has been projected. Yet the Governor cannot figure out a way to balance the budget without a tax increase?
