AFP Applauds Senator Johanns for Taking Firm Stance on Earmarks

Sen. Johanns questions the level of transparency and merit in the earmark system

WASHINGTON─ Nebraska Sen. Mike Johanns said today he will not ask for earmarks this year because he questions the level of transparency and merit in the current system used to evaluate earmarks.

Johanns says his office will develop its own transparent system in Nebraska if there is no push for earmark reform at the federal level.

In response to Sen. Johanns’ decision, the Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips released the following statement:

“Senator Johanns should be commended for putting his foot down on earmarks. While most politicians are tempted to fund wasteful pet projects through earmarked funds, Johanns is refusing to participate in a flawed system during a time when Congress is spending taxpayer dollars against the will of the people.

“We traveled the country in 2006, driving over 10,000 miles to 37 states on the Americans for Prosperity Foundation Ending Earmarks Express Tour, and we saw first hand that the American people want spending decisions to be made in a fair and open process.

“We need more transparency in government spending so legislators are held accountable for every penny they spend. Johanns has taken the high road on this issue, acting on behalf of the people he represents back in Nebraska and all American taxpayers.”
