Senator Conrad and Cap and Trade: Willing to Raise Taxes During a Recession?

The threat of a major tax increase from cap-and-trade legislation is back.

Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) remains open to using the little known practice of “budget reconciliation” to lower from 60 to 50 the number of senators needed to enact this big-government, higher taxes legislation, writes Kevin Cramer, president of the North Dakota Public Service Commission.

The goal of cap-and-trade is to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but such legislation will not only fail to achieve its signature goal as has happened with Europe’s ongoing attempt, but cap-and-trade will dramatically increase energy prices. This two-fold or greater increase will disproportionately hit the poor and substantially increase unemployment here in North Dakota.
