Breaking campaign finance laws?

Once again Sen. Ulysses Currie (D-Prince George's County) finds himself under the law enforcement microscope - this time for controversial, possibly illegal usage of campaign funds. This morning Annie Linskey of the Baltimore Sun writes about how Sen. Currie, chairman of the powerful Budget & Taxation committee, paid personal attorneys with money from his campaign account. AFP, along with liberal advocacy groups, condemned the use of campaign money for personal use.

Like I stated in the article, this is exactly the type of behavior that is driving an anti-incumbent fervor across America. Taxpayers are furious that the folks who represent us in Annapolis live by one set of rules, yet we have to live by another. Sen. Currie is the Governor's point man in the Senate for the budget. How can we expect a man who cannot follow the rules regarding campaign finance to properly balance the budget?

Whether this story gets legs and actually effects Sen. Currie's election prospects remains to be seen. However, this is just another example of a 'Culture of Entitlement' in Annapolis. Voters must stand up to stop this type of behavior. Feel free to email Sen. Currie and let him know your thoughts on his campaign spending money for his personal legal defense.
